The role of a Union Officer is to be a trustee of the union and to chair student council meetings, but in my eyes, it is much more than that. To me a Union Officer is a person who will use their voice to help shape the university and ensure the President and Vice President are held accountable and act upon what they promote, for the benefit of the students. I am a person who is open, willing and enthusiastic to make a change, a person who cares about the role they do. This is why I believe you should vote for me.

My name is Maysoon Abdulsalam, and I am a first-year law student, as well as a school representative for the school of Law, Criminology, policing and working with children, young people and families. Being a first-year student has been a truly eye-opening experience, as I have been able to work and meet so many new people, whether it’s in lectures, during SSCC meetings or even speaking to people around the campus. It has made me realise the importance of being able to understand people from different backgrounds with different wants and needs.  It is important to ensure that nobody’s ideas are overlooked, and given my experience as a school representative, as well as sitting on school council meetings, I understand the importance of ensuring students suggestions come to life by clearly communicating with the correct people to ensure that the feedback is effective.

As Union Chair, one of the duties is to chair student council meetings,  as a school representative, I have exercised this skill many times  and so this skill can be applied to the role of union chair as I can understand the importance of discussing crucial issues that will not only help the current students, but the students in the future. This is a skill that can ensure that the meetings can lead to a real change that has a great impact.

To student’s, accountability is crucial, being able to have transparency and effective communication will create a positive feedback loop. I am determined to ensure that any promises made to you are completed and have been acted upon.

This role is about a positive delivery and ensuring that you are aware of the processes and the actions that will take place after meetings.
