Within the university I have previously been the chair of the LGBTQ+ society. I care about ensuring all LGBT students and staff feel safe to be within the university and that everyone is free to be themselves whilst at the university.

What I aim to achieve:

  • I want to create more queer visibility within the university.

  • I would like to make a space where LGBT students and staff are free to talk about what is happening in the world and within the university, so I am able to assist in helping.

  • I want to advocate for the LGBT students and staff.

  • I would like to create more discussion around Trans rights and other LGBT rights that are happening outside the university but still impact within the university.

  • I would like to ensure Trans students are able to change their name and pronouns within the university without having to change it legally.

To achieve a safe space, I will work closely with societies such as the LGBTQ+ society and having speakers in to spread awareness and it will also help to promote the LGBTQ+ society as it is a safe space that is already in place. I will also be hosting events such as guest speakers and bar events for people to gain a wider understanding of LGBT, and so LGBT students and staff feel safe whilst at the bar.

In order to create more discussion about Trans rights and LGBT rights that impact the university I will be asking current and new students what issues they may be facing within the university whether this is not knowing if they can use their preferred gendered toilets or having to explain to every lecturer their preferred name and pronouns. I will then be bringing this up in meetings and I will be ensuring the students and staff get an answer on their questions.
