SU ELECTION

Why is university more than a degree?

University is not just about attending classes and completing assignments—it’s a place to grow, connect, and discover new passions. It’s where you shape your future and refine your career paths. But to truly thrive, we must feel valued, heard, and supported in every aspect of our student journey.

I’m Ashley Mananga, and I’m running for Student Union Elections because I believe that together, we can create a university experience that supports every student’s academic, personal, and mental well-being

My Vision: A Better Student Experience for All

I’m committed to creating a university where every student can flourish. My manifesto focuses on three key pillars that matter most to YOU:

1. Mental Health & Well-being: A Campus That Cares

Ensure students receive timely, face to face counseling and have private areas to discuss their mental health struggles no more long works to student union. (all inclusive, just because your struggle may not be on the criteria does not mean you don’t need support, even a listening ear is better than none). (PRIVATE spaces for mental health discussions).

Regular well-being checks- establish well-being check-ins to support those battling anxiety, low motivation, discouragement, health conditions other life events or responsibilities, any time of battle all inclusive.

Special support for student parents (tailored support)- dedicated kid's room (creche) to help student parents save on commute time and have their children close enabling them to focus on their studies while knowing their little ones are cared for and are safe.

I believe that by reducing the small stressors and challenges that continuously pile up, we can create a healthier, more supportive campus environment. This isn’t just about academic excellence, it’s about improving every facet of student life, ensuring you have the resources and support to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

What else?

University life can be stressful, and academic support often feels impersonal. Let’s change that! I propose:

• Clear Academic Guidance: Improve assignment guidelines, streamline course organization, and provide specific advice on coursework and dissertation support.

• Face-to-Face Tutoring: replace impersonal email chains with accessible, in-person tutoring and one-on-one workshops designed to prepare you for exams and manage academic stress.

• Personalized Feedback & Communication: work with tutors and lecturers to offer regular, tailored advice that caters to different learning styles, ensuring you always know where to turn for help.

Clearer Coursework & Dissertation Guidance: Start early with clear instructions, consistent feedback, and ongoing checkpoints to avoid last-minute panic.

• Regular Feedback from Lecturers: Get regular insights into your progress so you’re never left in the dark.

• Workshops & One-to-One Exam Preparation: Helping you feel confident and prepared for your exams.

3. Student-Friendly Campus: Practical Changes That Matter

A campus that works for everyone is a campus that thrives. To improve our student experience, I will advocate for: Improve signage and information so you always know where to find academic and mental health support when needed.

• clear campus navigation- improve sinage and information so you always know where

• inclusive infrastructure- adjust lecture hall chair-to table ratios to be more plus-size friendly, ensuring comfort for all students.

Bring back the ping-pong tables and enhance other recreational facilities to create spaces for relaxation and social connection.
