Being a student at University gives you the chance to take part in different things and stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new. We strive to offer all of our students the best possible chance at getting more out of their degree, and developing skills and experiences outside of their lecture spaces. At Newman, we have many opportunities for students to get involved with, including Societies and Raise and Give.
Societies are an amazing chance to express and explore any interest you have, but also to build a community of students who share this passion too. We host Societies for hobbies/interests, faith groups and academic societies. They are all student-run which allows you to network and make friends with students you may not have had the chance to socialise with before. They allow you to develop transferable skills which can not only help boost your confidence but these skills also look great to employers when you leave University. They are often low-cost which makes them even easier to access and allow you to become part of an accepting and blossoming student community outside of your degree subject.
If you are struggling to find a Society that reflects your interests, you can ‘Start a Society’ – all you need is one other person to be able to make this happen. This means that you will have a term to be able to gather the members needed to become a fully-developed Society. The Union will help you advertise the Society to recruit more members in order for this to happen!
Raise and Give also allows you to campaign and raise money for the causes that matter to you the most! There are opportunities throughout the year to fundraise for certain charities, but you do not have to be limited to this. Like Societies, this is student-led and allows you to meet other people but also network across year groups and subjects. They will be supported by us in the Students’ Union but also from other departments across the University.
