MY PROMISES/PLEDGES TO STUDENTS
All elected Officers create a number of Promises that they make to students. Their reports to Student Forum are based on these promises.
PROMISE 1: ACCESSIBILITY FOR STUDENTS
Continuing on from my work this year, I pledge to work on accessibility for students. I want to continue to work with the estates team and student support in creating campus more physically accessible. I aim to do this by working in line with their strategic reviews, as well as creating a general review each year.
With this, I pledge to make NSU more accessible in how it communicates with its members. This involves how we promote everything we do, how we talk to our students, and how we use our website.

PROMISE 2: MAKING YOUR VOICE THE LOUDEST
The main role of the Union is to represent students. Whilst students change year on year, the Union stays the same.
I want to change this by looking at HOW we represent our students. I want to ensure that everything we do comes directly from student feedback, whether it’s events and activities, or how we campaign and lobby the university for change.

PROMISE 3: ENGAGING THE UNENGAGED
One thing I have learnt from this year is that we don’t talk enough. When you look at our events, everyone attending is the same as the last event. When you look at our societies, everyone has similar members. Whilst we’re a diverse university, we lack in engagement.
I believe that we need to go back to basics and learn to speak to our students. One thing we missed during the pandemic was seeing our friends, catching up with each other, and enjoying what we do. I pledge to tackle the barrier of engagement. I believe that we use the lack of engagement as an excuse far too often, and that actually, we just need to be HUMAN.
Every student is a member of Newman Students’ Union, now let’s make them aware of it.

PROMISE 4: INCREASING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS
We are small and mighty, everybody knows it. But do we use this as an excuse for what we offer as a Union? This year has been more vital than most in ensuring that the student experience is exceptional. Coming out of a pandemic is tough, no one can argue it, but we all lack a sense of normality.
I want to increase the opportunities we offer to our students, or at least get better at shouting about the ones we already offer! This may look like more activities off campus, opportunities for developing skills in chosen job areas, and overall preparing for life outside of Newman.
Again, this comes to working WITH you as students, and understanding how we can make YOUR Newman experience the best possible experience.
