Quality Marks are awards that demonstrate that the organisation has the right culture and processes in place to be great! Whether these are for our services, or for how we act an an employer, it is important that we use these as measures to improve and better ourselves rather than as just a label to show off.

Below are the current Quality Marks achieved by Newman Students' Union.

QUALITY STUDENTS' UNIONS (QSU)

"Working Towards" Accreditation (Part A Complete)
Quality students’ unions are sustainable, impactful, and achieve great things for their students and society. The great work that unions do needs to be well recognised and resourced by the sector, by government and by the public.

Quality Students' Unions (QSU), is a framework to help students' unions achieve their full potential. It helps us collect and share good practice in the movement, turning this into useful advice, guidance and tools for unions to help our members be the best they can be. It outlines what good practice in Students’ Unions looks like across a number of themes covering their governance, leadership and management, their activities and their outcomes. It interlocks with, and complements, relevant standards and codes that also exist within the student movement and the charities sector such as the SU good governance code, Green Impact and Investors in People.

Part A is a framework to help unions ensure they’re compliant with their statutory obligations. Part B is a framework to help unions work to best practice – recognising where they are and helping them see how they can improve. Students’ unions using the framework can gain accreditation – getting verified to demonstrate their performance and enabling them to use the Quality Students’ Union branding.

DISABILITY CONFIDENT

"Committed" Accreditation
Disability Confident is creating a movement of change, encouraging employers to think differently about disability and take action to improve how they recruit, retain and develop disabled people. Being Disability Confident is a unique opportunity to lead the way in your community, and you might just discover someone your business cannot do without. It was developed by employers and disabled people’s representatives to make it rigorous but easily accessible – particularly for smaller businesses. The scheme is voluntary and access to the guidance, self-assessments and resources is completely free.

There are 3 levels designed to support you on your Disability Confident journey:
Disability Confident Committed (level 1)
Disability Confident Employer (level 2)
Disability Confident Leader (level 3)

As part of these levels, there are 5 commitments that each organisation should consider:
1. Ensure your recruitment process is inclusive and accessible
2. Communicate and promote vacancies
3. Offer an interview to disabled people
4. Anticipate and provide reasonable adjustments as required
5. Support any existing employee who acquires a disability or long term health condition, enabling them to stay in work
