WHAT IS THE PERIOD EQUALITY CAMPAIGN?
Over the years, Newman Students' Union has aimed to tackle period inequality. Currently, you can access free sanitary products from our office! However, we recognise that more can be done here to support our student population.
Last academic year we asked students about their experiences of period inequality. We had 139 responses, and here is what we found.
Last academic year we asked students about their experiences of period inequality. We had 139 responses, and here is what we found.
Ages of the respondents ranged from 18 to 48, with a range of students coming from various cohorts (foundation year, first, second, third, PGCE and so on). |
25% of respondents have experienced a financial struggle with sanitary products. We can only imagine that this number has increased since the cost-of-living crisis. |
AN UPDATE ON OUR CAMPAIGN
As of 2022, the Union decided to help with the cost of living by providing free sanitary products to students and staff across the university. These are available in select toilets across campus, including:
- Both Atrium Gender Neutral toilets by Reception - Atrium Accessible toilet by Reception - Women's toilets downstairs of the Atrium by Security - Floor 1 and 2 of the Library - Women's toilet in the Sports Centre - Women's toilet by the Sanctuary - Accessible Toilet by the Sanctuary |
As a union we have decided to purchase our sanitary products from a company called Grace and Green. We use this provider because they are sustainable, biodegradable and made from organic cotton and bamboo. These products are also cruelty free and vegan. We recognise that sanitary products are not viewed as a luxury, and we want to minimise the stress and cost of these items. These products are FREE for you to take.
You can find out more about our suppliers here. You can also order directly from them! Bag yourself a 30% discount when using DIGNITY30 at checkout. |
