WHAT ARE WE DOING?

The month of February is recognised as LGBT+ History Month. To celebrate with the LGBT+ community in the best way possible, we will be hosting a rainbow party in Senses Bar! Join us on Tuesday the 8th February from 8pm onwards, and make sure to read below to find out more information about this month and why it is so important.

You can also find various activities, posts, and blogs on our social media throughout the month.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

This month is important for a variety of reasons, from celebrating the community and those within it, to reflecting on our history and ensuring that we represent those who are no longer with us because of it. We have LGBT+ History month to remember those without rights, and to continue to unite and fight together. It is important that we continue to educate each other not only within his month, but in every day teaching.

Did you know that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the first Pride event in the UK? Whilst it is amazing to recognise the progress within these 50 years, there is still so much more to be made. In the UK, and around the world, members of the LGBTQ+ community are still being abused, thrown out of their homes, and bullied in schools and workplaces. The foundations that should protect the community - our governments, communities, institutions & families - too often stand silent, or actively harm those within it.

We want to make sure our students feel safe, no matter who they are. We are proud to be allies of the LGBTQ+ community, and endeavour to represent those who are part of that community.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?

There are many ways to get involved with LGBT+ History Month. You can join us, the Students' Union, at our rainbow party on the 8th February, where we'll be providing a safe space to celebrate the community. We want to ensure that everyone, no matter who they are, feels supported, welcomed, and able to have fun within the Newman family.

Outside of this you can find different activities and awareness posts on our social media, as well as different blog posts from your exec!

You can also do different activities outside of Newman! There are many events, campaigns, and other things you can do to support the LGBTQ+ community and become allies.
