PLEASE NOTE THAT SINCE THIS PROJECT WAS LAUNCHED THE UNIVERSITY HAVE NOW AGREED TO SUPPORT STUDENTS WHO NEED EMERGENCY ACCOMMODATION IN HALLS WITHOUT THE NEED TO COME TO THE STUDENTS' UNION.
THIS IS A FANTASTIC WIN FOR STUDENTS BY THE SU, AND WE'RE PROUD TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THOSE STUDENTS WHO GENUINELY NEED THE SUPPORT (2020).

Newman Students' Union regrettably recognises that sometimes students are put in the unfortunate position of becoming homeless, and while the University would have offered Emergency Accommodation previously, the process to secure it would have taken a few days (at the very minimum) and students would be required to pay back the £99 per week charge once they are settled.
The problem with this is that if a student requires "emergency accommodation", this suggests that it is pretty urgent, and that they cannot wait a few days for an answer from the institution... So this is where we have stepped in to help!
NSU has been given grant funding from the University to run the Emergency Accommodation Project where NSU will not only speed up the process, but will pay for the first two weeks Accommodation for the Student, so they can spend that time finding their feet, rather than worrying about finding shelter over their head.
We have all FAQs below on how to access these funds should you find yourself in a difficult situation.
WHAT ARE THE FUNDS FOR?
These funds are specifically for Student at Newman University who have found themselves homeless for whatever reason.
HOW MUCH FUNDING CAN I RECEIVE?
Students don't directly receive the funds; Newman Students' Union will pay the University for UP TO TWO WEEKS ONLY for the student to live in University halls while they find somewhere more sustainable and long-term. This may be in University halls, but students will be required to pay for their accommodation after the two weeks are up!
HOW DO I ACCESS THE FUNDS?
The very first thing you need to do is contact Student Services as soon as you know that you will become homeless. Student Services will then inform the Students' Union and Accommodation that you will require Student Halls. You will be able to move in as soon as Accommodation respond to say they have room available. The Students' Union will sort all the payment processes so you don't need to worry!
WHAT INFORMATION IS SHARED?
Your name, Student Number and University email will be shared with the Students' union and Accommodation, but never your circumstance. All data is in line with our data sharing agreement with the University and within our Data Protection policy which can be found HERE
CAN I BE REFUSED ACCOMMODATION?
While this is a project designed to help students in particular need, all University policies are still in operation, including those that may prevent you from staying in halls of residence, such as Disciplinary Procedures. To see a summary of University Halls Policies please CLICK HERE
