Together We Can Make a Difference.
If you're not already familiar with me, my name is Gemma. I am a final year law student. During my time at the university, I have been a class representative, foundation year and welcome mentor, and student trustee on the SU Board. I have also undertaken two SSP projects and some EYCCP courses. As a mature student, lone parent with a child who is T1D, and being neurodivergent individual, I understand the challenges that we face every day.
Running for the role of President is my opportunity to give back and help make your university experience as good as possible. I will ensure that democracy and transparency are the cornerstones of our Union. As your President, I am committed to being welcoming, approachable, and inclusive. I aim to implement the student-led strategy where you feel heard, supported, and included. I want to reflect the diversity of our student body, have fun!
My Manifesto Pledges:
Community
Foster a broader community:
I will work on improving communication between the SU and students. I will increase the awareness of our SU and what we do for students. I want to explore digital signage and a travelling student 'surgery' that meets you where you are. I want to better promote how the SU can help you and what you can do to support it, too. I aim to keep you regularly updated on what the SU is doing to improve the experience of ALL students. I will strive to develop a working relationship with the university and promote its student-focused schemes. I want to explore ways the SU and I can be more viable for postgraduate and doctoral students; I want to discuss how increasing postgraduate engagement could work and if there is an event the SU could put on to help support you.
Mentoring system:
If elected, I will explore the possibility of a mentoring system in partnership with the university. As a mentor and mentee, I understand the value of having someone to guide and support you through your studies. I will also build relationships with local businesses and professionals to connect students to professional mentors who, in turn, may help with placements and employment after Newman. I want to give students the best start to transition into university life and to help other students.
Voice
Free cuppa & chat:
I will organise a free weekly cuppa & chat, with the days changing each week to accommodate different schedules and allow us to start conversations about what's going well and what's not. I want to give you a sense of belonging in the SU. Your feedback matters! If there are any issues, we can work together to find solutions.
University Systems
I want the SU to be a place where we can advocate on your behalf. Suppose you are impacted by issues such as timetabling or find it challenging to access support for matters such as extenuating circumstances? In that case, I want to work closely with the university to ensure the SU is getting across what students want and hold the university accountable.
Well-Being
Support with the cost-of-living crisis:
I aim to network with local organisations such as Family Action and ask what support they can offer students struggling with the cost-of-living crisis. I hope to continue the free period product initiative that is in place.
Promoting health and well-being:
I want to promote health and well-being by encouraging mindfulness, exercise, and healthy habits. I want to explore a student-led allotment. I aim to create quiet spaces on campus to do mindful colouring and contact a yoga instructor for support. I am in talks with another student, hoping to offer one free 30-minute Personal Training session a week. I am committed to providing first-line mental health support and will aim to train mental health first-aiders.
Thank you for considering me as your next President.
