Student Think tank Idea.
Who is your favorite singer?
Recently, there has been an offer made to my cohort which I believe should be offered to all students. This offer has many, many benefits to students.
I propose, as an extension of this idea, that all first, second and third year students receive the option of an 'additional module', different from any current modules. This module will simply run through a line of communication achieved through tutorial-only sessions. There would be no need for a moodle page or anything of the sort but student support for this would be of the highest importance from lecturers should this be passed.
This optional module includes a piece of academic work, such as an essay or presentation, or further digital work from students such as a documentary or a podcast. The word count suggested at level 6 is 4,000 words or equivalent. The suggested word count for level 5 would be at least 2,5000-3,000 words or equivalent. It would have the same 20 credit mark as all other essays so students do not miss out on receiving a good degree mark. The main point of this concept is that it can be 1, on anything (within reason) a student wishes to choose or is passionate about and 2, can be delivered however a student wishes to.
So this could be delivered as an essay or a documentary. This would be up to the student and agreeable with a lecturer.
This would allow; a more flexible degree programme; allow students to access their passions in their chosen degree; allow students to deliver with means of more comfortable methods and ultimately allow a student to feel like they are more in control of their degree and that Newman also recognizes this point and can emphasize it's commitment to students. This, as far as I know, would be first of its kind to any institution to offer total control to its student of a module by offering this kind of choice to second and third year students.
