The Board of Trustees have legal, financial and governance responsibility of the Students' Union. They meet four times a year to ensure that the Union is operating under its charitable objectives. The Board Meeting Agenda usually has: Reports from the Executive Committee, a Report form the General Manager, A Report on the Performance of the SU (KPIs), A Financial Report, HR and Staffing Reports and Policies for discussion. They also appoint and appraise the Students' Union General Manager to oversee the day-to-day running of the organisation. The Trustee Board is made up of 10 members and is a variety of external professional, student and Officers which includes:

- The Vice-President of the Union
- 1 x PT Executive Officer
- 2 x Student Trustees
- 4 x External Trustees
- 1 x University Staff Member Trustee
CHRIS BLACK (PRESIDENT & CHAIR OF THE BOARD)
GARY HUGHES (EXTERNAL & DEPUTY CHAIR OF THE BOARD)
Gary is Chief Executive of Durham Students’ Union and Vice-Chair of the Newman SU Board and has an extensive career in senior management in students’ unions including Sunderland, Coventry, Liverpool John Moores University and Manchester Metropolitan University. He has also been an elected Officer at the National Union of Students and, later, an NUS staff member. His professional background is in higher education policy and organisational development of student leadership, policy and campaigning functions.
Gary was born and bred in Northfield and studied at the University of Birmingham where he was President of its Guild of Students. He loves the contribution of Newman students to their University, and their community, and supports the elected Officers in making sure that the University is the best it can be.
Gary will sadly be leaving NSU after two terms (8 years on the Board). We thank Gary for all of his support during this time which has included two diagnostics, and an incredible growth in the organisation.
MATTHEW BEDDING (EXTERNAL TRUSTEE)
Matt currently works for Transport for London but previously has had a career within Students' Union as a Vice President and working within all things student engagement at four excellent Students' Unions.
Matt's current work is within people and organisational strategy as well as internal communications and creating diverse and inclusive workplaces.
Matt loves the set up at Newman believing it to be a fantastic organisation supported by passionate students.
KIRA COX (EXTERNAL TRUSTEE) - TO BE RATIFIED AT AGM
Kira is a previous Students' Union President at Liverpool Hope which is similar to Newman being a small catholic institution, and has experience of delivering training, running events, supporting small charities and engaging with the Government on issues effecting a diverse range of groups on a national level.
In 2020 Kira joined the University College of Football Business taking on the role of student experience co-ordinator, and developing the student voice.
She is excited about being part of the trustee board at Newman SU as she understands the unique challenges faced by small and specialist institutions, but can already tell that the team at Newman won’t let that stop them!
TIM HEWES-BELTON (EXTERNAL TRUSTEE) - TO BE RATIFIED AT AGM
Tim is Student Engagement Manager at Worcester Students’ Union and has been working in Students’ Unions and the wider charity sector for over 10 years including roles at the Union of Students at the University of Derby and the World Organization of the Scout Movement’s European Office in Brussels.
Tim is passionate about the power that SUs have to develop and nurture the students they support and has a extensive experience of developing and delivering membership services within SUs.
Tim has been following the work of Newman Students’ Union for a number of years and is really excited to be joining the Trustee Board and supporting the Union as it continues to deliver for its students.
AMANDA OWEN-MEEHAN (EXTERNAL TRUSTEE) - TO BE RATIFIED AT AGM
Amanda is the Director and founder of a national consultancy and training business established in 2018 following over 20 years experience within Higher and Further Education. Senior leadership roles have included those held with The University of Birmingham, Birmingham City University, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Coventry University, Istituto Marangoni (London) and The Workers’ Educational Association (WEA).
Amanda’s passion for the transformative power of education began when studying as a mature student at Aston University after a move to Birmingham from her hometown of London. With a career focused on service improvement and student experience, she champions a culture where students are empowered as partners to make positive changes in their learning experiences. She brings not only HE policy expertise but also a detailed understanding of the Birmingham entrepreneurship and business landscape.
LEWIS PALIN (EXTERNAL TRUSTEE & UNIVERSITY STAFF MEMBER)
Lewis has been at Newman for years; some would say he's part of the furniture. He is currently Estates and Facilities Manager at Newman University and responsibility for the daily running of the campus Estate and Services.
Lewis isn't new to the Students' Union having been a full-time sabbatical many moons ago. He is a big advocate of Green Week and is also a Governor at a local school.
Newman Students' Union are proud to recruit at least one staff member from Newman University to demonstrate their growing partnership, and Lewis is a key member of the team and supporting that critical relationship.
LIAM ROGERS (SABBATICAL TRUSTEE)
Liam has been involved in Newman Students’ Union for the duration of his time at Newman. He has been part of the Executive Committee as the Events and Activities Officer in 2018/19, and has been elected as the Vice President for 2019/20, and again for 2020/21.
Liam Studied Joint Honours Sport and Education at Newman and has been an active member in the football team as he was the Social Secretary for the football team in 2017/18 and was also the 1st team captain for the 2018/19 academic year.
Liam has a real passion for student activities, keeping people well and active and accessibility.
