► How to avoid Plagiarising

How Do I Avoid Plagiarising?

Step 1 - Plan Ahead
Time can fly by when you have an essay due in, as you may have multiple essays to write, or the sun might be out or someone’s birthday etc. But you need to plan ahead. Write out a time table for 3 weeks in advance with:
  • Week 1 for reading, note taking & critical thinking.
  • Week 2 for writing a plan and checking it through.
  • Week 3 for writing up. Remember to go back and review your work.

NEVER panic and turn to websites that offer to write your essays for you. Lecturers at Newman will know if it’s your work or not. These web bought essays are of a poor standard and you will be caught. The University College carefully monitor your work and will notice if the standard suddenly changes.

Step 2 - Record Source Details
You need to record accurately where you took your notes from. You won’t remember 2 or 3 days later let alone weeks where you took a fantastic note from, so don't guess take good notes and you won’t miss the chance to include all of them in your work.

Step 3 - Take Appropriate Notes
You take notes either to select understand or remember. You’ll be dealing with a variety of different information regardless of your reasons, but remember to take accurate clear notes and record the details; plagiarism is not just the words, but also the copying of ideas. You may not be reproducing the information in the same way but remember it always needs referencing.

Step 4 - Reference Correctly
Check your subject handbook for the correct method of referencing for your module. There are also guides available on moodle for you to follow. Remember you need to use quotation marks if you’re reproducing someone else’s work and to always acknowledge if you have used an idea or data from someone else’s research.

And Remember…
If you’re not sure and you’re having trouble speak to someone. Your tutor, the library staff, the student support staff and the Student’s Union are all here to help so come and ask.

The Student Support team are running workshops through-out the year to help you with note taking and referencing so don't be shy and book yourself into one and avoid plagiarising!
