What is...

Counselling provides a safe and non-judgemental environment where thoughts and feelings can be expressed and explored with a trained and understanding listener. ANY matter whether emotional, social or concerned with work can be discussed with someone who is not directly involved. You may be concerned about an issue that has bothered you for some time or has just arisen recently. This may cause stress or uncomfortable feelings e.g. anxiety, fear of unhappiness. Through the counselling service it enables you to feel more in control of your life and able to make choices of your life and be able to make choices or to cope with conflict, change or loss. It does not seek to give advice nor to solve your problems for you.

Some of the issues that students bring to counselling include…

Study difficulties

Problems with family or home life

Relationships

Anxiety

Eating difficulties

Anxiety

Eating Disorders

Sexuality

Self Confidence

Depression

Vocation or career difficulties

Bereavement

Is it...

Confidentiality is an essential part of counselling. Neither the content of your sessions nor the fact that you are attending for counselling will be divulged to any one else with the following important expectations:

  • You may request that a letter is written to your tutor or GP.

  • Your material may be discussed with the counsellor’s supervisor, this is a professional aspect of counselling and names are never divulged. The supervisor has no connection with

  • NewmanUniversityCollege.

  • Real Danger of harm to yourself or others; the counsellor may consider it appropriate to breach confidentiality, but not without discussing it with you first (there is a difference between feeling murderous and actually committing murder).

  • Terrorist activities: the counsellor is required by law to report these

How many appointments will I need?

You and the counsellor with decide how many sessions will be useful and also the frequency. Each will last 45-50 minutes depending on your individual needs.

How much does it cost?

The counselling service is free to all students and members of staff.

How do I make an appointment?

A list of appointments is available outside the counselling room (S9 ground floor in the Science Block). If there is a vacancy, put your initials against appropriate form, put it in a sealed envelope and slide under the door. Ruth will get in touch with you as soon as possible. If you are out of college or Ruth is unavailable, you may contact Lyn Beverly, Head of Student Support ext – 2414 or leave a message on Ruth’s answer phone ext. – 2328.

Effective counselling depends on mutual commitment. It is expected that you will make every effort to attend sessions (If it is not possible – e.g. illness, please ensure that you cross off your initials on the appointment list, or leave a message on ext – 2328. You do not need to give your name). In the same way, the counsellor will ensure she is there for you and will make every effort to inform you in advance if it is not possible to keep the appointment.
