Agenda Item 3 - Stationary Policy

What is it?

Student Council is a body of students who meet once a month to discuss all aspects of the student experience at Newman and are also the Governing Body of NSU.  What’s this mean?  Well it means that Student Council is the 'boss' of NSU and can mandate (tell) the Executive team what they should be doing.  This does not mean that the Executive cannot do other things but they have to prioritise what they do over the coming month to ensure that they do what the students want.

Still confused?

To put it another way - the students who sit on Student Council set policy and work out what issues are most important to students.  This may be such things as inadequate IT access, poor support from certain areas of the college, poor disabled access or just dodgy entertainments.  Council will then tell the Executive (who are part of Student Council in their own right) that they should do some work surrounding these issues, such as talking to staff about the concerns, campaigning and causing a fuss if necessary or just hiring a better DJ!
Who sits on council?
ANY STUDENT can be a member of student Council.  There are 51 members including the chairperson.  Many of these members represent a certain area, for example 2 members will represent the sports teams.  There are also several members who are there as your 'bog-standard' student.  Although some members may represent an area this does not mean that they ONLY have to speak for this area, all students can bring up any issues.  Students representing an area should just try to check if their area has anything they wish brought up at the meeting and also report back to them on any issues that affect them.  Members for each area should be elected in a 'mini-election'.  Please contact a member of the Executive for more info.
Can I join?
YES!  If there are empty places any student can join council, EVEN IF THEY WANT TO REPRESENT AN AREA.  If a mini-election is needed NSU will help organise this.  If not you will be invited to the next council meeting and the current members will vote on whether to admit you there and then, it's that easy!  Just make yourself known and we'll do the rest.
